Indiana residents have a new way to help save money on prescription drugs, and everyone is eligible to take part in the program, even if they already have insurance.

The Indiana Drug Card, which can be used at 50,000 stores nationwide, is funded through several sources, including drug-makers and pharmacies, 6News' Rick Hightower reported.

For mothers such as Evone Jones, saving a few dollars at a pharmacy is a real deal, which is why the drug card is expected to be popular.

"I think that's a very good idea, because you might not have the money to get your medicine, and I think that will help a lot of people out," Jones said.

A card can be obtained by going online and entering a name and e-mail address. The card can then be printed out.

"The program can save them anywhere from 30 to 75 percent," said Doug Simms, development director of Indiana Drug Card. "On average, it saves you right around 30 percent on prescription drugs."

Walgreens and other pharmacy giants have their own prescription card plans, which the company said has saved people a lot of money, especially on generic drugs.

Unlike that plan and others, the Indiana Drug Card is free, and that's why Walgreens pharmacists expect to see it often.

"It's another added benefit for everyone that doesn't have insurance," said Amy Beebe, a pharmacist.
