Former network news anchorwoman and Indianapolis native Jane Pauley returned to her roots Wednesday for the opening of a clinic named after her.

The Jane Pauley Community Health Center will provide health care to anyone, regardless of the recipient's ability to pay, 6News' Julie Pursley reported.

The center is housed in the Renaissance School at 30th Street and Post Road, which provides an alternative education for children who don't succeed in a typical classroom setting.

Similarly, the health facility has designed a plan for families that struggle in a typical health care setting. It provides medical, dental and behavioral health services for uninsured and underinsured people. The cost of patient care is based on a sliding scale that corresponds with family income.

"If you don't take care of these problems in childhood, not only do you spend a lot of health care dollars, waste a lot of health care dollars, but the kid that doesn't attend school, doesn't graduate from school, doesn't get a job," Pauley said.

The clinic will also treat adults, offering an option for those who don't have a family doctor.

"That's what we hope to have. Establish this as your medical home," said Dr. Tom Ledyard, the center's medical director. "We will also have a referral network, so if you do need specialty care, we'll have … access to specialists as well."

To Pauley, a 1968 Warren Central High School graduate, the health center carries special meaning.

"I was educated first through 12th grade in Warren Township, so this is very, very much my home," Pauley said.

Warren Township Schools provided the space, and Community Health Network invested $350,000. More information about the clinic can be obtained by calling 317-355-9320.
