INDIANAPOLIS -- Hoosiers at high risk for catching the H1N1 flu waited in long lines across Marion County Saturday for a free vaccine.HealthNet, partnering with the Marion County Health Department, administered about 3,000 shots and flu mist vaccines at six clinics, 6News' Sarah Cornell reported.More: H1N1 Special Section
At each location, lines ran out the doors of the clinics, sometimes wrapping around the building itself."I expected it to go a little faster, but it really hasn't," said one person waiting at the Barrington Health Center.Officials said they got as many people as they could through before the vaccines ran out."It's actually very organized. We have people lined up, and we only have so much space in the area where we're giving the vaccine, and so we're only taking small groups of people," said nurse Rene Barner.Despite the long wait, many said they were just happy to have the vaccine."It's worth it because I don't want to get the H1N1," said Bonita Edwards. The vaccines were reserved for those deemed at high risk for contracting the virus, including pregnant women, young adults and children.About 2,500 people were inoculated Thursday during the county's first H1N1 flu clinic at Lafayette Square Mall.State Health Commissioner Dr. Judy Monroe said Thursday that Indiana has received about 278,000 vaccine doses -- far fewer than the 929,000 doses it had expected by late October.A representative with the MCHD said it's unclear when the agency will receive more of the vaccine. No more free clinics are planned for the upcoming week.
