State Fares Better Than Others, Official Says

Indiana health officials said the state remains far behind in its expected availability of H1N1 flu vaccine as instances of the illness continue increasing among residents.

State Health Commissioner Dr. Judy Monroe said Thursday that the state has ordered 479,500 doses of the vaccine so far.

Many of the doses have been received, and the rest should arrive in the next few days, Monroe said.

That's still only about half of what the state had expected to receive by this time as there have been nationwide delays in vaccine production.

The agency said the state had 10 H1N1-related deaths as of last Friday. Thirty-nine Indiana schools reported absentee rates of 20 percent or more last week.

Monroe said she has no idea when H1N1 cases might subside.

Marion County is planning another H1N1 clinic next week. Few details are available, the clinic is expected to be held at Lafayette Square Mall, where the county's first mass vaccination took place last week.

Marion County Health Director Dr. Virginia Caine said she expects the county to be in short supply of vaccine until mid-November.

Caine said that Indiana is faring better on the supply front than other states.

"That was due to the efficiency of the state of Indiana being prepared and getting their orders in very early," Caine said.

Caine advised residents to get their regular flu vaccine as soon as possible. Flu season lasts through April.
