INDIANAPOLIS -- Some parents are questioning why some Marion County preschoolers aren't being vaccinated against the H1N1 flu along with older students. This week, the Marion County Health Department began doling out free vaccines to elementary students in Indianapolis Public Schools and the surrounding township schools.More: H1N1 Special Section
But preschoolers at those schools are not included in the vaccination plans, officials told 6News' Stacia Matthews.MCHD spokesman John Althardt said that officials are aware of the dilemma, but that they believe many toddlers will be inoculated at mass clinics where they can be with a parent.Evelyn Dartis said she doesn't have that option. Her 3-year-old daughter, who attends the Hilltop Learning Center at the J. Everett Light Career Center in Washington Township, is autistic and can't wait in line at a public vaccination clinic."There are some special-needs kids that can do that if they're in a wheelchair, they don't have a problem with it. But for her, it's just not going to happen," she said. "I would like for them to include the Washington Township pre-K's with the rest of the students."Dartis also said her pediatrician doesn't have the H1N1 flu vaccine.Althardt said the health department is working on alternatives for families with special circumstances. The MCHD said it plans to immunize as many children as possible to prevent the spread of H1N1.
