INDIANAPOLIS -- Some in the medical community, including an Indiana breast cancer specialist, are questioning new recommendations about when women should get mammograms.A government task force said Monday that most women don't need the procedure in their 40s, and should get one every two years starting at 50 -- a stunning reversal and a break with the American Cancer Society's long-standing position.Dr. Robert Goulet with the IU Simon Cancer Center called the latest developments "explosive information."
"The National Task Force and the American Cancer Society, who are the leading who are the leading authorities in this area, can't come to an agreement at this point," he told 6News' Renee Jameson.Goulet, who is not pushing for the change, said there needs to be more consensus on the recommendations before he will change what he tells his patients."That's a very difficult question, and the answer to that is an analysis of the cost efficiency," he said. But breast cancer survivor Vivian Aronson said she believes that lives may be compromised if the recommended age is changed to 50."The earlier you start having mammograms, you have a much better chance of detecting cancer at an earlier stage and surviving it," she said. The new guidelines are for the general population, not those at high risk of breast cancer because of family history or gene mutations.
