Family gatherings may be a highlight of the holiday season, but they could also drive up flu cases in Hoosiers aren't careful, experts said.

While the H1N1 virus isn't spread through food that's been cooked properly, even one person who isn't feel well could serve the infection to others through handshakes, hugs and utensils, 6News' Stacia Matthews reported.

"As they have contact with people and handle objects other people handle, and those people touch their hands or mouths, this illness can transmit very readily in large groups," said epidemiologist Pam Pontones.

The American Red Cross offered tips to keep the family fun safe, including washing hands frequently, avoiding kisses and handshakes and putting serving utensils in every dish, including snack bowls.

In the bathrooms, make sure soap is readily available and use disposable hand towels or paper towels to cut down on the potential for germ spreading, they said.

Some Hoosiers aren't taking any chances.

"(I'm telling guests to) wear a mask, take your medicine and come to the family dinner," said Bill Corder, who's joining 30 family member at his mother's house.

"Chances are, at a big meal, someone may not feel good, so I would suggest that they stay home," said Pam Keith.

If someone does become sick, experts recommend the person be isolated in a separate area for care.

"None of us wants to share the flu with our families, especially if they are young children and pregnant women who are particularly vulnerable to the effects of the flu," said Dr. Joan Duwve of the Indiana State Department of Health.

The Indiana Adult Immunization Coalition also suggests that every home have a flu emergency kit with ready-to-eat, nonperishable foods, a first aid kit and prescription and non-prescription medication.
