County Reports Low Demand For H1N1 Vaccines

Johnson County Can't Move Vaccine

While Hoosiers have lined up by the hundreds in several central Indiana counties to get the H1N1 vaccine, Johnson County officials said they're having trouble moving their doses.

Last weekend, county health officials expected to immunize 1,400 in the high-risk group at a public clinic, but only administered 450 doses, 6News' Stacia Matthews reported.

"It was disappointing," said JCHD Director Dr. Craig Moorman.

To date, the county has received more than 20,000 doses of vaccine.

Health officials said they believe many people are being inoculated at two drug stores and 46 doctors' offices in the area that were provided with the vaccine.

Moorman said the department is considering taking the vaccine to county schools to vaccinate roughly 25,000 children, but that the plan is still in the works.

"The hard part is making sure we have enough vaccine before we get into the school, so we don't have to cancel, reschedule. There are a lot of logistics involved," he said.

Meanwhile, the department is stockpiling its vaccines just in case another peak sends people rushing to get vaccinated.

"We anticipate there may be another peak soon, and I think it would be prudent for everybody to go ahead and get the vaccine," Moorman said.

The agency plans to hold two more clinics for priority residents.

There have been a total of 33 confirmed deaths in Indiana from the H1N1 flu, state health officials said.
