Hoosiers Get 70,000 Doses Of Recalled H1N1 Vaccine

16,000 Recalled Doses Distributed In Marion County

POSTED: 2:33 pm EST December 23, 2009

Indiana health officials said about 70,000 doses of a recalled H1N1 vaccine have already been used in the state.

Drugmaker MedImmune recalled nearly 5 million doses of vaccine Tuesday because the nasal spray appears to lose strength over time.

State Health Commissioner Dr. Judy Monroe said Wednesday that about 110,000 doses were distributed in Indiana, but most have been used.

Monroe said the recalled vaccine poses no safety problems and children who received only one dose of the two-dose immunization series should complete the second dose.

The Health Department also said that the overall rate of flu-like illness reported by Indiana emergency rooms is continuing to decline, down to about 20 percent of what it was eight weeks ago.

Marion County received 16,000 doses of recalled vaccine, and most of it was given out in October and November.

"(We) will be contacting (providers) so they can send us any of the recalled lots that they have not used," said Dr. Virginia Caine, director of the Marion County Health Department.
