INDIANAPOLIS -- Hoosiers aren't as concerned as they should be about a possible resurgence of the H1N1 flu virus, state health officials said. Now that winter has a grip on Indiana and the annual flu season is in full swing, the H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu, is primed for a comeback, 6News' Stacia Matthews reported.More: H1N1 Special Section
"We still have as much cases of influenza activity out there as we would typically have in early January," Indiana Health Commissioner Dr. Judy Monroe said Tuesday. "In our peak -- January, February, maybe even March -- that's when we get the majority of deaths."Since its arrival in Indiana almost a year ago, H1N1 hit in two waves -- the first in April, and then again in the fall, killing 35 people. When vaccine began to trickle into the state in October, health officials concentrated on children, pregnant women and young adults, the groups most vulnerable to H1N1 complications. But Monroe said history suggests a third wave of the virus may pose a greater risk to other groups, including the elderly and otherwise healthy Hoosiers."My message today is actually for those that we said back in the fall weren't in the priority group. Now you're a priority group and you should be vaccinated, because we don't know what's going to happen come spring," she said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has shipped 1,926,400 doses of H1N1 vaccine to Indiana to start the new year.
