BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Some are raising privacy concerns about a program Indiana University said will be aimed at encouraging employees to make healthy decisions. The university is currently crafting an initiative, set to be rolled out next year, that would include incentives for health screenings and meeting objectives related to cholesterol, blood glucose and body mass index, 6News' Joanna Massee reported.School officials said employees will be invited to participate in the voluntary program, and will be charged more for health insurance if they do not take part.
"We see it as an opportunity for employees to not only do something about the cost of their health care, but to do something about their health," said IU spokesman Larry MacIntyre.Employees were split on the idea of the health care incentive."I personally feel that health insurance from an employer is a privilege, not a right," said IU employee Becky Carter."(It's an) invasion of privacy, I believe," said IU employee Mark Bragdon. "I think sometimes it can be used against you."But the university said it's trying to help its employees be healthier and save money, not gather their personal information for any other reason."We don't think it's an invasion of privacy because, again, it's totally voluntary," MacIntyre said. "No employee will be forced to do this."In 2007, Clarian Health dropped a controversial plan to charge employees an extra fee for being overweight or smoking. The company does offer incentives to workers who meet health stands, including weight, cholesterol and BMI levels.
