Healthcast: Carpal Tunnel; Lower Back Pain
Rehab Center Offers Nonsurgical Treatment For Nerve Disorder

INDIANAPOLIS -- A nonsurgical therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome recently debuted in Indianapolis, Staying Healthy's Stacia Matthews reported.
Physiotherapy Associates is the only rehabilitation center in Indiana offering the low-level laser treatment, which has a 80 percent success rate, Matthews reported.
The painless treatment stimulates tissue repair by causing inflamed cells to energize, said Mary Pat Forbes of Physiotherapy Associates.
"The cells use their energy for metabolism to fight injury, to fight inflammation. So the more energy you can release, the better they're able to fight," Forbes said.
Typically, 15 sessions are needed. Each session lasts about 10 minutes.
The procedure is covered by most insurance companies, Matthews reported.
Trial Participants Sought For Lower-Back Pain Treatment
The Indiana Spine Group is involved in a national study to measure the effectiveness of a heat treatment for lower back pain.
The procedure in question uses a catheter to place a coil into a damaged disk. Doctors heat the coil to burn the nerve that is causing the pain.
People interested in participating in the trial can call (800) 383-0047.
