INDIANAPOLIS -- The latest craze among kids has some doctors worried the youngsters could be putting their health at risk.Silly Bandz are multicolored bracelets that come in an array of designs -- from animals and pirates, to roses and water creatures -- and bounce back into shape once taken off the wrist."I have a banana and an elephant on right now. I'm just trying to see how many I can collect," said Kaitlyn Dutchess, who was swimming at the Perry Park Pool on Tuesday.
"I have 65," said 8-year-old Samatha Barnett. "I just like their shapes. My favorite is the dolphin."But schools in several states, including New York, Texas, Florida and Massachusetts, have banned the bracelets, calling them distracting and potentially dangerous.Dr. Mercy Obeime with St. Francis Hospital said the bands aren't likely to cause serious injury, but can cut off circulation by creating a tourniquet effect, restricting blood flow to the hands."It can create tingling in the hands and fingers, change the color and cause numbness," she said.Obeime recommended that Silly Bandz always be worn loosely and that parents monitor their children's hands for discoloration, allergic reaction and any indications that they are too tight.
