With obesity rates up across the country, Indiana is holding steady, but health officials said more needs to be done.

The Hoosier state ranked 16th in the nation for the second straight year, according to an annual study from the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Researchers found 28.1 percent of Indiana adults and 14.6 percent of children weighed more than is considered healthy, 6News' Stacia Matthews reported.

Obesity rates have been dropping in the state, from 2005's fourth-place ranking and 2006's eighth-place distinction.

Indiana Health Commissioner Gregory Larkin credits the drop to new initiatives, such as InShape Indiana and company incentives, aimed at getting Hoosiers moving more and eating healthier.

"We've invested $20 million to improve parks, create more walkways, more bike paths," he said. "You have to have those choices for people to make them."

The South has serious problems with obesity, according to the study.

Ten out of the 11 states with the highest rates were in the South, along with Mississippi, which topped the rankings for the sixth year in a row with 34 percent of adults and 22 percent of children weighing more than is considered healthy.

Larkin said Indiana is doing better, but has to do more.

"I would love to see us be at least 20 or below, but that's a long row to hoe," he said.

Colorado had the lowest obesity rate for adults at 19 percent.
