Combo Vaccine Aimed At Simpler Flu Season

Indiana health officials are hoping this year's flu season will be simpler than before, thanks to a new combination vaccine.

Last year, Hoosiers stood in long lines waiting to get protected during the H1N1 flu pandemic, many getting at least two separate shots, 6News' Stacia Matthews reported.

For fall 2010, a new combination vaccine will protect against two influenza strains and the H1N1, all in one shot.

"I believe this will be a lot simpler, a lot less anxiety, because folks won't have to get two vaccinations," said John Althardt with the Marion County Health Department. "It should be much easier, much more convenient for the public to get their flu shots this year."

The agency will begin holding its annual flu clinics next month.

For the first time, the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention is urging everyone older than 6 months and not allergic to eggs to get vaccinated.

There's also a new higher dose flu shot for those 65 years old and up, formulated to provide better protection to weaker immune systems, health officials said.

A record supply of 170 million shots and nasal vaccine is projected nationwide, and shipments have already started to arrive in central Indiana, health officials said.

Like in years past, the new combination shot takes a few weeks to kick in. Protection is expected to last through the winter.
