Low-Carb Plan Is Dangerous, Panel Says

A group of doctors has called for a closer look at the safety of the Atkins Diet, saying it may be linked to two deaths.

At a press conference in Washington, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine said Thursday that the high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet is dangerous and deadly.

The group, which called for an inquiry by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cited the cases of two people who died of cardiac arrest while on the diet. It also said dozens of other people have said they became ill while following the food plan.

Responding to the group's assertions, some diet and nutrition experts said Thursday that the diet could increase risk factors for heart disease and other medical problems, but they said that doesn't prove the diet is dangerous, Staying Healthy's Stacia Matthews reported.
