Trouble Losing Weight? Maybe It's A Thyroid Problem

Hypothyroidism Can Damage Heart

POSTED: 11:49 pm EST July 21, 2004

People who have dry skin, difficulty losing weight, and are always tired could have hypothyroidism, RTV6's Stacia Matthews reported Wednesday.

Left undiagnosed, hypothyroidism -- characterized by an underactive thyroid gland -- could damage the heart and other parts of the body.

A daily pill can correct the condition, but people must first know they have a problem.

"It's a matter of debate whether to screen women for thyroid disease," said The Carmel Clinic's Dr. Emily Frank. "But we do a screening for most women in their 40s and 50s because sometimes it can go along without strong symptoms, so we miss it."

Hypothyroidism is one of a number of medical conditions about which people can address at the "Ask The Doctor Roundtable" at the Marott on Thursday. For more information, call (317) 713-6815.
