INDIANAPOLIS -- Winona Memorial Hospital will soon close after it was forced into bankruptcy last week, hospital officials said Thursday.
The 48-year-old Indianapolis hospital had said Aug. 24 that it intended to reorganize under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. But on Wednesday, the hospital learned its senior lender, Healthcare Business Credit Corp., would no longer fund hospital operations, Winona said in a press release.
The hospital, located at 3232 N. Meridian St., said it will close after patients are discharged or transferred to other hospitals.Winona said it owed millions of dollars to suppliers and various agencies when physicians bought it from Leland Medical Centers Inc. in May.In August, three creditors, including local utilities Indianapolis Power and Light and Citizens Gas, filed a court petition in an attempt to collect money owed by the hospital, sending it into bankruptcy.IPL said Winona owes it nearly $400,000; Citizens Gas said it was owed about $123,000.Winona said Thursday that it was hurt by the collapse of expected real-estate refinancing, and it was unable to obtain loans or other assistance needed to continue operating."Despite the loss of our investment, we are proud of our attempt to save the hospital, and we are equally proud and thankful for the support of hospital staff and those in the community who worked hard to keep Winona Hospital's doors open and to offer excellent medical care," said Dr. Robert Mehl, chairman of the hospital's board, in the release.Winona, which was established in 1956, was licensed for 317 beds and had 200 employees.Watch RTV6 at 5 and 6 p.m. for coverage of this story.
