INDIANAPOLIS -- A research project to find a vaccine for prostate cancer is being partially conducted in Indianapolis.Prostate cancer is the leading cancer killer among men, claiming around 30,000 American lives in 2003, Staying Healthy's Stacia Matthews reported.Researchers at Indiana University are testing the vaccine and are looking for male test subjects.
Eduardo Garcia has signed up to try the vaccine. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer 14 years ago. His condition was stable for around 10 years, but when it began to spread, his doctors told him about Provenge, a new treatment designed to stimulate a man's own immune system to fight the disease."I was hesitating. I was afraid. My daughter helped me a lot. She said, 'You have nothing to lose. If it doesn't work for you, maybe it'll help someone in the future.' That just convinced me. I said, 'Why not?'"The vaccine is in the late stages of testing. As with other cancer drugs, it may not provide any benefits and may cause side-effects, Matthews reported. For more information about taking part in the study, call (866) 4-PROSTATE.In an effort to catch prostate cancer early, doctors at IU are also offering free exams on Sept. 22. Registration is limited to 50 men and includes a PSA blood test and a digital rectal exam. Call (317) 274-6988 for information on the screenings.Cyberhair Offered As Solution For Thinning HairA new innovation in hair replacement may be an option to help with thinning hair.Cyberhair uses synthetic fibers that mimic the real thing, Matthews reported.Four cyberhairs are tied to one natural strand for a thicker and fuller mane."Most weaves you can't cut and color or pull. With this she can perm, she can color, she can wash and brush it just like she treats her natural hair," Cyberhair technician Emily Miller said. The process takes less than one hour. As the hair grows out, more is added every four to six weeks, Matthews reported.
