Surgery Scars Heart To Treat Irregular Rhythm

Indianapolis Surgeon Is Third In World To Perform Procedure

POSTED: 5:42 pm EST January 11, 2005

A local surgeon is among the first in the world to try a complicated but minimally invasive procedure to cure atrial fibrillation, a condition that causes irregular heart rhythm.

The surgery uses microwave frequency to form scar tissue on a certain part of the heart. The scarring blocks electrical signals that cause irregular beating, Staying Healthy's Stacia Matthews reported Tuesday.

Dr. Daniel Beckman, a surgeon at Indianapolis' Methodist Hospital, was the third in the world to perform the procedure, Matthews reported.

Atrial fibrillation can lead to stroke or other complications.
