Diabetics Sought For Insulin Inhaler Study

POSTED: 5:31 pm EDT July 26, 2005

Researchers are looking for people with type 1 diabetes to volunteer for a study of an inhaled insulin treatment, Staying Healthy reporter Stacia Matthews reported Tuesday.

The Indiana University School of Medicine is one of 70 sites around the world testing the treatment, which was developed by Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly and Co. Doctors need 400 participants in the study.

Participants must be type 1 diabetes patients who rely on an insulin shot before two meals per day. They cannot be on an insulin pump, smoke or suffer from asthma or any other lung disorder.

Over two years, study participants will inhale insulin rather than getting it from needles.

If the inhaler proves to be safe and effective, it could hit the market by the end of this year.

In a previous phase of the clinical trial, researchers determined that the inhaler controlled blood-sugar levels just as well as insulin shots, Matthews reported.

To volunteer for the study, call (317) 274-3948.
