Police: Heimlich Maneuver Performed On Boy Who Choked, Died

MARTINSVILLE, Ind. -- A teacher who saw a Martinsville High School freshman choke last week performed the Heimlich maneuver on the boy before the student died, Police Chief Frans Hollander said.Police said Jesse Tucker, 15, choked on a hamburger as he was leaving the school cafeteria during a lunch period Friday. Two people called 911, and Tucker was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Hollander said the teacher who did the Heimlich maneuver -- which consists of thrusts to the choking person's abdomen -- might have had trouble with the move because she was much smaller than the 300-pound boy.Paramedics say that if a person doing the Heimlich maneuver cannot reach around the choker, the maneuver performer should take alternate steps.
