INDIANAPOLIS -- The hottest new grills have young consumers putting their money where their mouth is, but this might not be the type of grill most think of.Expensive custom-made mouthpieces, knows as "grillz," can cost more than just cash. The mouthpieces are made from silver and gold, encrusted in gems, and are sometimes called "fang to fang."
The hip-hop fashion trend has fans covering their pearly white smiles for golden grins. Dentists said they are putting their mouths in jeopardy."There's always the potential of having problems with the inside of your lip. They might extend into the gum and irritate the gum," said Dr. Harold Smith, an Indianapolis dentist. "Because they're snap-on, there's the possibility … the teeth could be scraped or chipped."Allergic reactions and infections are also common. Anyone using the mouthpieces should limit the time they wear them and remove them before eating.Grillz should be cleaned every day to remove food, plaque and other debris. Jewelry cleaner should never be used on them.More: Grillz Info From American Dental Association
