For the third year in a row, a valuable gold coin has been found in a Johnson County Salvation Army kettle.

The South African Krugerrand, valued at $1,300, was slipped into a red kettle outside the Kmart on U.S. 31 in Greenwood Thursday night, said agency spokesman Mike Rowland.

He said the rare coin was donated anonymously, and wasn't found until volunteers were counting change at the end of the night.

"On behalf of the people who do this, it's anonymous so we don't know who it is, but we can't thank that person enough," said Jeff Stanger with Salvation Army Indiana. "The amount of good we can do with such a small coin, it's just amazing."

The same kind of coin was discovered in a kettle outside a Sound Bend Walmart earlier this month, and in a kettle in Kokomo.

Rowland said that as of Friday, the Salvation Army was at 56 percent of its $3 million fundraising goal for the year.
