Want Green Grass? Water In Morning

Mow Lawn In Same Direction

Is the grass always greener on the other side?

If you always mow your lawn in the same direction, it may be.

"You do want to cut the grass in a different direction every time you cut it, so that the grass doesn't develop an uneven cut," said Maureen Ressler of Down To Earth Landscaping.

Ressler added that if you mow too low, the day sun will burn out the lawn.

The ideal height is 2 1/2 inches.

Also, give your grass a drink at the right time.

"The best time to water would be first thing in the morning," Ressler said.

If it's humid, your grass, doesn't need as much water. Ressler recommended not watering grass then because you don't want bacteria to grow.

Fungus love dark wet climates, so watering in the morning is better. Ressler added that it's important to soak it.

The roots of the blades will grow deeper to reach the water.

In addition, after you've sprinkled the lawn, stay off it so that you don't create footprints or divots in the lawn.

The pressure from a foot squeezes the air out of the soil and this leads to poor air circulation in the root zone.

You should only fertilize three times a year -- in spring, summer and fall. If you have a small amount of clippings, you don't have to pick them up. They will nourish your lawn.
