Detectives Theorize Behrman Was Hit Accidentally

Investigators Focus On Three Possible Suspects

POSTED: 6:27 p.m. EST April 4, 2002

What happened to missing Indiana University student Jill Behrman and who was involved?

RTV6 learned Thursday that the answers may be unfolding.

Detectives have identified three possible suspects who may have been in a car that struck Behrman on May 31, 2000, RTV6 reporter Sarah Fraidin said.

Investigators said they have what they call "good information" that supports the theory that Behrman was off her bicycle taking a drink of water when a speeding car accidentally hit her.

What happened next remains unclear, Fraidin said. One theory is that Behrman died, the suspects panicked and her body was eventually dumped. She also could have been severely injured and died as the suspects were taking her to the hospital, or she could have been left to die in a remote area.

Detectives said they also received "good information" that prompted them to make an extensive search this week in a portion of Salt Creek, Fraidin said.

They haven't said if anything was found.

"They may not be the answers we want, and it may not be the outcome we want, but it gives us the answers to the questions," Jill's father, Eric Behrman, said of the latest developments.
