Authorities are looking into an alleged incident of animal cruelty that may have involved fireworks.

The veterinarian caring for a dog found Thursday near 38th Street and Moller Road believes that someone used fireworks to burn the animal's face, leg and rear-end.

The Indianapolis Humane Society staff named the dog "Spirit" because she remained sweet although she was in terrible pain.

Mary Gittinger found Spirit and told RTV6 that the dog jumped into her car as she opened the door.

"She was trying to get help. I know she was trying to get help," Gittinger said. "She was in extreme pain. I don't know who did this, but they need to be taught a lesson as far as I'm concerned."

Spirit is receiving hydrotherapy to soothe her burns and remove dead skin.

She has been eating and drinking and is expected to make a full recovery.

If you have any information about this incident, call the Humane Society at 872-5650.
