Fast Indy Rookie Targets 'Tough' Top-11 Start

Australian Knows First Time At Speedway Will Be Challenge

Will Power wants to be among the top 11 qualifiers for the Indianapolis 500, but he says he has no illusions about how big of a challenge that will be for him and other Champ Car transfers.

Power, the 2006 Champ Car rookie of the year and the winner of the series' final race last week in California, was the fastest driver in Sunday's testing for Indianapolis 500 newcomers.

But ex-Champ Car drivers -- even ones who've had a bit of success like Power -- will have to make adjustments as they switch to IndyCar Series events like the Indy 500.

"We want to qualify well on Saturday. It'd be really nice to get top 11, but that's going to be tough. We haven't got the technology or experience yet," Power told 6Sports' Kip Lewis on Monday. "But for me, I really want to finish the race. I really need to finish and get some points."

Power and 11 other Indy 500 newcomers completed their rookie testing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, with Power posting the fastest lap at 220.604 mph.

The test completion clears the way for them to try to qualify for the May 25 race, beginning Saturday, when the first 11 of the race's 33 starting spots are up for grabs.

"We wanted to get through all the phases (of rookie testing) and just get a feel for the circuit ... and that's what we did. We were pretty happy," said Power, a 27-year-old from Australia.

Champ Car folded into the rival IRL Indy Car Series this year, unifying top-flight North American open-wheel racing for the first time in 13 years. Power said he was glad for the merger.

"I always thought it'd be great if the two series came together, but I never thought it would happen because they tried so many times and never came together," he said. "It's awesome to see the two series together, all the good drivers together and all the good teams."

Power also is happy that drivers get three weeks to gear up for the Indianapolis 500.

"I think it's really good, especially for the transition teams, because we've got a lot more time to learn about ovals and as a driver as well, you get a lot more time to feel the car and understand it a lot more," he said.
