INDIANAPOLIS -- Carb Day was a washout, but thousands of race fans were still in good spirits despite wet, cool conditions Friday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway before Sunday's 92nd Indianapolis 500.Drivers were able to get on the track about 15 minutes after the scheduled 11 a.m. start time, but more rain made time on the track very short. Drivers will not be given extra time on the track for practice on Saturday.Despite the cool, damp conditions, race fans' moods were sunny in anticipation of a beautiful, fun-filled race weekend, 6News' Julie Pursley reported. The third turn quickly filled up with people who said they wouldn't miss what has become a racing tradition for them. Some shivered in shorts, but others had on layers of clothes so they would be ready for whatever the day brings."I'm waiting on another 5 degrees. Then, I'm going to open a beer," said Doug Abbett. "We've been out for 25-30 years -- a little chilly this year, but it never stopped us before."Speedway officials hoped for a record turnout Friday."The fact that we're now racing again under one unified open-wheel series -- there's so much excitement and enthusiasm for the sport," said Ron Green of IMS.The track was dried off so drivers could take their final practice laps and fans could soak up the excitement, but more rain moved in."We'd come out if it was pouring rain -- die-hard Indy fans," said Stephanie McIlwain.Persistent rain that moved in from Illinois kept things on the track dreary.
