INDIANAPOLIS – Bittersweet, a café planted on Indy’s eastside in the Irvington neighborhood, closed Tuesday morning after opening its doors just one year ago.

Laura Johnston, owner of the café, announced the closing via Facebook stating, “1 year ago today BitterSweet opened. With heavy heart, we have decided to close the doors. Thank you to all who have supported me in this past year. It has been a great experience.”

Johnston originally described the eatery’s menu as “California cuisine” that featured breakfast, lunch and dinner bites along with homemade desserts.

As the head cook and baker, Johnston was known for creating wedding cakes and special sweet treats for the café.

In February 2017, Johnston said the restaurant would continue to sell small bites but with an emphasis on baked goods. She noted she would also use the space as a small gathering venue.

It is unclear if Johnston will continue to offer baking services or what development will emerge in the Bittersweet space.
