As "Good Morning America’s" Robin Roberts prepared to undergo a bone marrow transplant to treat a rare blood and bone marrow disorder, one Hoosier family is fighting a similar battle.

Like Roberts, Joel Denney, 27, of Fishers, has myelodysplastic syndrome and needs a bone marrow transplant to survive.

Roberts’ sister is a compatible match for her transplant, but Denney’s sister, Laura Linville, isn’t, RTV6’s Anne Kelly reported.

Denney’s family is urging people to register to become donors to increase his chances of finding a match.

“I’m his only sibling. It was my greatest hope to be able to provide him with that life. I was tested when he was 3 years old, when he was diagnosed. That’s when we found out I was not a match,” Linville said.

Doctors told Denney it's crucial that he finds a match soon.

To register to become a blood or bone marrow donor, visit -- www.bethematch.org or visit the Indiana Blood Center at 3450 North Meridian Street in Indianapolis.
