INDIANAPOLIS - This year's flu season is starting earlier and coming on stronger, Indiana medical officials said.

Indianapolis hospitals saw a 38 percent increase in cases of people with flu-like symptoms last week compared to the week before, The Marion County Health Department said.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported 41 states, including Indiana, with widespread flu activity.

Healthcare professionals said it is the earliest peak of the flu in 9 years.

The flu has the highest death rate of any vaccine-preventable disease and doctors are urging people to get vaccinated.

Marion County residents can contact the flu hotline (317-221-2121) for tips and advice this flu season.
