INDIANAPOLIS - St. Vincent Hospital plans to hand out up to 7,000 bags of road salt on Saturday as part of an effort to help prevent winter weather-related injuries.

Winter begins a week from Friday, and with more snow expected this season than last season, prospects for snow- and ice-related injuries could be higher.

St. Vincent volunteers will bag and distribute the salt beginning at noon on Saturday.

They are encouraging people who can't afford salt or have a neighbor or family member in need to take advantage of the offer.

Residents should have salt on hand to put on their sidewalks and driveways. It can help prevent concussions, fractures, sprains and other health problems caused by falling on ice.

"It is a very significant hazard. Part of what we are doing here is to try to raise awareness about the dangers of falling on ice," said Dr. Marcus Hendry.

The salt will be distributed from the emergency room ambulance bay at St. Vincent, which is off West 86th Street.
