INDIANAPOLIS -- Andrew Kirchofer and Oscar Escobar have turned an unsuspecting small space from historic to a modern haven of comfort and intrigue.

Their space in the Historic Ambassador at Library Square in the St. Joseph Historic Neighborhood just north of downtown is full of art and unique pieces that offer comfort and function.

Their style is influenced by early to mid-century modernism with lots of warm, dark, and light neutrals. They have strived to create a modern, yet livable atmosphere.

Inspirations for their home are drawn from various places, mostly from travel, exploring different environments, restaurants, hotels and AirBnbs, among others.

Their favorite designers are Mies van der Rohe, Saarinen, and Eames and their favorite publications are Dwell, Wallpaper, Design Milk, and Dezeen.

The exposed brick, warm wood floors and large windows are their favorite architectural element. The Barcelona chair is their favorite furniture piece.

"It amazes me that a piece designed in the 1920s is able to retain such a modern appearance,” said Kirchofer .

Their biggest challenge living in a small space is they wish they had one more closet and an additional 150 square feet. They’ve always tried to live in a smaller space just in case they decide to move to a place like New York City, Chicago or San Francisco.

"We love beautiful, unique lamps. Chances are if we see one we're going to find room for it. Same goes for new smart home gadgets,” said Kirchofer .

Their design advice is explore and evolve your style. Don't tie yourself down to a particular time period or school of thought.

Their favorite places to shop are: Midland Art and Antiques, CB2, Crate & Barrel, West Elm, Design within Reach, Dot & Bo, and IKEA.

Kirchofer admits he’s a bit of a nerd and loves researching new smart home products. Currently they have an Amazon Echo (voice-controlled assistant), Philips Hue bulbs (connected color-changing light bulbs), Sonos (wireless music system), and the Nest thermostat (Wi-Fi connected thermostat).

Kirchofer went to IUPUI and works as a software developer at the MacExperience. Escobar completed his undergraduate degree at Indiana University, and postgraduate degree at University of Minnesota and works as an occupational therapist.
