CARMEL, Ind. -- Two of the dogs rescued from a rat-infested home in Owen County last year are now ready to find their “furever” homes.

Last May, 82 dogs were rescued from a home in Rural Owen County that was declared a “public health emergency” because of a massive rat infestation. Exterminators say they killed more than 100,000 rats on the property and the home was destroyed because of the contamination.

Sammie and Stella were two of the dogs rescued from that home, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at them.

Kyla Slone has been fostering the two pups and said they’ve come a long way since the nightmare they were living in last year.

“They are amazing animals. They are resilient,” said Slone. “Their transition, for me as a foster mom, has been something words can’t describe.”

Sammie and Stella are just two of dozens of pets up for adoption at Our Lil’ Bit of Heaven Animal Rescue’s “Adoption Party” this weekend at Speck’s Pet Supplies in Carmel.

The event will be held Saturday, March 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
