Sox Rally To Edge Twins

POSTED: 11:12 pm EDT July 8, 2008

(Sports Network) - Brandon Moss drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and finished the game with two RBI as Boston rallied to clip Minnesota, 6-5, in the middle contest of three at Fenway Park.

Manny Ramirez, who drove in the lone run in Monday's win, hit a game-tying two-run homer for the Red Sox, who have taken the first two games in the series and four of six overall. Boston crept within three games of first-place Tampa in the AL East, after the Rays fell to the Yankees 5-0.

David Aardsma (3-2) picked up the win by pitching two-thirds of an inning of scoreless relief. Jonathan Papelbon worked out of a jam in the ninth to record his 27th save. Starter Jon Lester went 7 1/3 innings, but yielded nine hits and five runs.

Brendan Harris finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored for the Twins, who have lost two in a row after a five-game win streak. Delmon Young, Nick Punto and Denard Span drove in a run each.

Matt Guerrier (4-4) took the loss, allowing four hits and three runs in one frame. That spoiled a solid outing by starter Nick Blackburn, who gave up six hits and two runs over 6 2/3 innings.

Minnesota took a 5-2 edge in the eighth when Young's one-out single brought home Joe Mauer. However, the Sox stormed back with four in their turn.

Jacoby Ellsbury slapped a leadoff double against Dennys Reyes, who was lifted Guerrier. He allowed a single to Dustin Pedroia, then Drew's groundout brought Ellsbury home to make it 5-3. Ramirez followed by unloading a first-pitch two- run homer into the seats above the Green Monster to draw Boston even.

"I think it was a really good situation that we were in," Moss said. "Even though we were down by three, we had our leadoff guy coming up in Jacoby, Pedroia, whos been on fire, J.D. and Manny. I don't think in that place was surprised to see Manny go deep in that situation, he's done it so much."

Mike Lowell fanned but Kevin Youkilis doubled to the gap in left-center. He moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored when Moss slapped a single up the middle. Guerrier finally got Julio Lugo on a check-swing third strike to end the rally.

Papelbon gave up a leadoff double to Punto, who moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Span. The runner was stranded 90 feet away, though, as the closer struck out pinch-hitter Jason Kubel and got Alexi Casilla to ground weakly to second to end the game.

"We battled pretty hard to get a 5-2 lead," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. "We just couldn't stop them and some guys had some good performances. That's what it is here. It's a great baseball team. They've been world champions a couple of times in the last three or four years and you know they know how to win."

The Sox picked up a run in the first on Drew's double off the Monster. Ellsbury, who singled to start the inning, came around to score on the hit.

Minnesota countered with three in the fourth. Justin Morneau singled with one out, then Young singled two batters later. Harris brought both home on a triple along the wall in right, and Punto followed with a single up the middle to score Harris.

Lester ran into trouble once more in the seventh, as Harris led off with a double and scored on Span's base hit which put the Twins up 4-1.

In the home half, Youkilis tripled to left-center, then scored on a one-out sac fly by Moss.

Game Notes

Youkilis was 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs...Casilla's 14-game hit streak ended, as he was 0-for-3 with a pair of walks...Kevin Cash, usually the personal catcher for knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, started in place of Jason Varitek, who was rested by manager Terry Francona. Varitek is expected to get the start on Wednesday...Blackburn needed only 85 pitches to complete his outing, while Lester threw 117.
