Cards Take Aim At Fifth Straight Win Against Lowly Padres
(Sports Network) - Jamie Garcia makes the first major league start of his career this afternoon when the St. Louis Cardinals try and complete a four- game sweep of the San Diego Padres at Busch Stadium.St. Louis won their fourth straight game on Saturday, as Albert Pujols went 3- for-4 with four runs driven in the Cardinals' 6-5 win. Rick Ankiel and Skip Schumaker were responsible for an RBI apiece for St. Louis, which will be trying for its first four-game sweep of the Padres since turning the trick in July 1990. Todd Wellemeyer (8-4) got the win last night as he went 6 1/3 innings and was touched for five runs on five hits. Ryan Franklin tossed two innings of scoreless relief to notch his 14th save. Edgar Gonzalez hit a three-run home run for the Padres, who have dropped five straight contests. Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Kouzmanoff each had an RBI in defeat. Randy Wolf (6-10) took the loss as he was hit for six runs -- four earned -- on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. Garcia gets the call today, as he becomes the latest stopgap for the St. Louis rotation. Garcia, who will be starting in place of the injured Mark Mulder, was 4-4 with a 4.59 ERA at Triple-A Memphis. San Diego will pin its hopes on Cha Seung Baek, who is 2-4 with a 5.14 ERA in nine games (seven starts) with the Padres. Baek hasn't started since losing to the Marlins back on July 9 when he allowed three runs and six hits in five innings. Baek, who started the year in Seattle before being dealt to San Diego, has never faced the Cardinals. The Cardinals have won in seven of their last eight encounters with the Padres, including five of the six games played between the teams this season. San Diego has also suffered losses in seven of its eight most recent tests in Busch Stadium.
