Nats' Hill Has Surgery; Belliard Out With Groin Strain

POSTED: 10:06 pm EDT September 5, 2008

(Sports Network) - Washington Nationals pitcher Shawn Hill underwent season-ending surgery on his right elbow Friday.

Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery on Friday and removed spurs in the posterior elbow.

Hill, who missed the entire 2005 campaign while recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery, is expected to be ready for the 2009 season. He had a record of 1-5 with a 5.83 earned run average in 12 starts this season.

The Nationals also announced first baseman Ronnie Belliard has a right groin strain, which could sideline him for the remainder of the season. Belliard suffered the injury in Thursday's 2-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves. He is hitting .287 with 11 homers and 46 RBI in 96 games this year.
