Wellemeyer And Cards Down Reds

POSTED: 10:34 pm EDT September 27, 2008

(Sports Network) - Todd Wellemeyer had a strong outing and Troy Glaus hit a two-run home run as the St. Louis Cardinals thumped the Cincinnati Reds, 8-5, in the middle contest of both clubs' final series of the season, a three-game set at Busch Stadium.

Wellemeyer (13-9) yielded three runs on seven hits and one walk while fanning three over 6 1/3 innings to halt a slide of three straight losses. Albert Pujols and Felipe Lopez also hit home runs while Adam Kennedy doubled and scored twice for St. Louis, which carries a five-game winning streak into the final contest of the season.

Aaron Harang (6-17) was touched for six runs -- four earned -- on nine hits and one walk in his five-inning start. The right-hander struck out a pair of batters in taking the loss to close the book on a dismal campaign.

Jerry Hairston Jr. had two hits and three RBI, including a two-run homer while Corey Patterson had a pair of hits and scored three runs. Paul Bako was 2- for-3 and knocked in a run for Cincinnati, which has lost four straight.

A Ryan Ludwick single followed by a two-run homer from Glaus got the Cards on the board in the second inning and a two-out Lopez solo shot in the third made it 3-0.

A pair of two-out RBI singles from Wellemeyer and Mark Johnson plated two unearned runs in the fourth after Kennedy reached on an error by shortstop Jeff Keppinger.

Cincy got two back in the fifth to make it 5-2. Patterson singled and Bako walked with both movers moving up on a sacrifice. Hairston followed by lining an RBI single to right, moving Bako to third, and Keppinger hit a sac fly to center.

St. Louis kept it up in the home half, though, as Lopez walked with one down, stole second and came home on a single to left from Ludwick for a 6-2 game.

Patterson doubled leading off the seventh and scored on a Bako single, but St. Louis answered again in its half on a Pujols line-drive screamer over the wall in left off Jon Adkins.

David Weathers came on for the eighth and allowed an RBI single from Cesar Izturis to score Kennedy, who doubled down the left-field line leading off.

Cincinnati wouldn't go quitely, though, and rallied for two runs off Chris Perez in the ninth. Patterson reached on an error by Pujols to start and Hairston followed a pair of strikeouts from Perez with a two-out, two-run shot to left for an 8-5 score. Keppinger then roped a double to left, but Perez got Joey Votto to fly out to left to end the game.
