Milton To Have Knee Surgery

POSTED: 3:45 pm EDT April 23, 2006

(Sports Network) - The Cincinnati Reds will place pitcher Eric Milton on the 15-day disabled list Monday, retroactive to April 19, and the left-hander also will undergo arthroscopic left knee surgery on Monday, the team stated on Sunday.

Milton was scheduled to start on the mound for Cincinnati against Milwaukee on Sunday afternoon, but the team discovered on Saturday that he was experiencing discomfort in his left knee and decided to scratch him. He flew back to Cincinnati yesterday and was examined by team medical director Dr. Tim Kremchek, who discovered damaged meniscus cartilage.

The 30-year-old Milton is expected to miss the next two to three weeks, but that could last longer since this will be the third procedure on his left knee since 2002.

"There's concern about that," said Reds manager Jerry Narron. "There's concern about how much he's going to be able to throw the first week after the surgery and what he's going to lose between his last outing and when he'll be able to start working."

Aaron Harang, who was scheduled to start on Monday, started on the mound for the Reds on Sunday.

Milton has started three games this season and posted a 2-1 record. In 18 innings he has a 6.50 ERA with 13 strikeouts.
