Desperate Dodgers Continue Series In Washington

(Sports Network) - Greg Maddux will get another shot to prove his worth for the road-weary Los Angeles Dodgers, who resume a three-game series tonight versus the host Washington Nationals.

Maddux joined the Dodgers last week in a trade with the San Diego Padres and made his debut Friday against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Maddux was rocked for seven runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings of an 8-1 setback, falling to 6-10 with a 4.25 ERA in 27 starts with the Padres and Dodgers.

The future Hall of Fame right-hander, whose 353 career wins is still one shy of tying Roger Clemens for eighth on the career list, has dropped two straight starts since winning three in a row. Maddux is also 3-6 in 13 away starts this season.

In 57 career starts against the Washington/Montreal franchise, Maddux is 24-16 with a 2.44 earned run average and 10 complete games, including three shutouts.

Maddux will get a shot at trying to halt LA's current five-game losing streak Wednesday night. The Dodgers fell to 0-5 on their 10-game road trip and have dropped seven straight away from Chavez Ravine. They've also lost seven of their last eight games overall and fell to 26-37 as the guest in 2008

In last night's 2-1 defeat to Washington in the opener of this series, Nomar Garciaparra scored the only run for Los Angeles on a fielder's choice and Manny Ramirez went 3-for-4 in a losing effort. Los Angeles has been outscored by a 29-6 margin during the current five-game slide.

Derek Lowe suffered the loss despite pitching eight strong innings and yielding two runs on six hits with six strikeouts.

Luckily for the Dodgers, NL West-leading Arizona lost to San Diego on Tuesday and remained three games ahead of Los Angeles in the division standings. LA will close out its road trip with three games against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field over the weekend.

Washington put the brakes on a six-game home losing streak at home with Tuesday's triumph, which opened up a nine-game homestand. Cristian Guzman finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and Lastings Milledge homered for the Nationals, who won for only the third time in their last 17 games overall.

Starter Collin Balester worked five-plus innings and earned the win, yielding one run on five hits with two walks. Balester helped the Nats improve to 24-39 in their new digs this season.

Toeing the rubber for the Nats tonight will be Tim Redding, who is 8-8 with a 4.54 earned run average in 27 starts this season. Redding is just 1-5 in his seven most recent starts, but did not factor in the outcome of a 4-3 win against the Phillies on Thursday.

Redding held Philadelphia to just a run and three hits in six innings of work.

The right-hander is still in search of his first-career victory against Los Angeles, as he owns an 0-3 record and a 6.06 ERA in five career appearances (3 starts) versus the Dodgers.

Los Angeles swept a three-game series versus Washington at Dodger Stadium from July 25-27 and is 11-2 over its past 13 meetings with the Nationals.
