Protesters Declare 'Independence' From Property Taxes

Many Say Relief Doesn't Go Far Enough

Several dozen people braved heavy rain Friday morning to declare their independence from property taxes.

Protesters gathered outside the governor's residence on Indianapolis' north side to complain that they haven't seen any of the tax relief that is supposed to be coming, 6News' Norman Cox reported.

The people at the protest said one unfair tax was traded for another, pointing out that they are paying higher sales taxes to pay for property tax relief.

Many also said that their property tax catch-up bills this spring were higher than the ones they got last year, thanks to the special reassessment ordered by Gov. Mitch Daniels.

Friday's rally was organized by the Libertarian Party and other anti-tax groups. Protesters said they want Daniels and the Legislature to listen to them about eliminating property taxes altogether.

"I'm here because as far as I'm concerned, this problem has not yet been solved," said one protester. "My tax relief means that my taxes, instead of going up 100 percent, only went up 50 percent. That is not my idea of relief or solving the problem."

State leaders hoped that the action they took during the last legislative session would defuse the property tax crisis, but Friday's protesters said they are determined to keep the issue on the front burner.
