INDIANAPOLIS -- A company that makes batteries for electric and hybrid vehicles plans to base its research and production facilities in central Indiana.

EnerDel will create more than 850 new jobs in Indiana through 2012.

The company currently operates a 92-person production facility on the northeast side of Indianapolis. It plans to begin hiring additional engineers, production associates and administrative staff later this year.

EnerDel develops lithium-ion batteries for use in hybrid, plug-in electric and electric vehicles.

"Indiana is the heart of America's manufacturing might, and a linchpin in the automotive industry," said Ulrik Grape, president and CEO of EnerDel.

The company plans to expand its Indianapolis operation, build another facility in Noblesville and build a manufacturing operation at an Indiana location that has not yet been determined.

"Eight hundred fifty jobs of any kind is great news. When those jobs are in a technology of tomorrow, like electric cars, it offers the prospect of even bigger news to follow," said Gov. Mitch Daniels, who was on hand for the announcement.

EnerDel was founded in 2004 and is currently the only manufacturer producing lithium-ion batteries in the U.S. for the automotive market, according to a news release from the company.

EnerDel will receive up to $7.125 million in performance-based tax credits for expanding in Indiana.
