A former H&R Block manager has been sentenced to two years in prison on federal charges that she tried to steal about $218,000 in tax refunds by filing fake returns.

Federal prosecutors said Lori Crisp, 44, of Fishers, filed 47 fraudulent returns in 2005 while she was the manager of a H&R Block office in Indianapolis. She pleaded guilty in October and was sentenced Tuesday.

Prosecutors said Crisp prepared all the phony returns, but used the identification numbers of tax preparers she supervised for 43 of the filings.

The Internal Revenue Service paid eight claims worth $34,157 before detecting the scheme.

Crisp was also ordered to repay the claims.

Prosecutors said Crisp tried to hide her actions by shredding office files for those returns.

In addition to the prison sentence and repayment, Crisp will also be on probation for three years.
