Massive Sale Attracts Bargain Hunters
National Road Sale Along U.S. 40 Begins
Bargain hunters began taking advantage of miles and miles of deals along U.S. 40 Wednesday in an annual event that runs through Sunday.The National Road Yard sale spans 824 miles of highway from Maryland to Illinois, slicing across central Indiana on the way, 6News' Julie Pursley reported.The road runs through Indianapolis as Washington Street. About 157 miles of U.S. 40 is in Indiana, and there are deals to be had mile by mile.
"I usually stop. We go out one day anyway," said Danny Mesecher, who was perusing the bargains.Shoppers can find just about anything alongside the road, from antique items to things that have barely been used.Outdoor furniture, books and glassware were among popular items shoppers were pining for, along with "junk," one shopper admitted."Usually you can find bargains and sometimes you can't, but I'm prepared," said shopper Pam Rolle.Merchants are catering to customers looking to stretch their dollars."The new stuff is so high, and with the economy, more people are looking for used," said Janice Weddle. "It's less expensive, especially if it's nice."Churches and nonprofit groups also try to unload items during the sale.
