GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Cabela's Inc. is trying to sell a 100-acre site in Greenwood on which the outdoor retailer had originally planned to construct a large store.Greenwood Mayor Charles Henderson said he was notified Wednesday that the Nebraska-based company planned to sell the development site on prime real estate on County Line Road, just east of Interstate 65.In 2007, Cabela's announced that it would build a 125,000-square-foot store in Greenwood, but backed off that plan in early 2008, citing economic conditions.
"We performed a thorough review of all the land we own for future store locations to determine the future potential of those sites," said Cabela's CEO Tommy Millner in a news release. "We have completed this review and have made the decision not to build a store in Greenwood."Preliminary work had already begun on the land, and other retailers were also set to move in near the store, including a movie theater, grocery store and water park. Those plans were also shelved.Since then, the land has been dormant. Cabela's had planned to employ as many as 250 people in Greenwood. The company had been offered $18 million in municipal bonds to construct the store.
