Money For Heat Help Burns Out

Heating Assistance Program Expires

The future of a program that helped thousands of low-income Hoosiers heat their homes last winter is now in question.

The statutory authority for the Universal Service Fund expired this May, 6News' Derrik Thomas reported.

The program provided about $3 million in assistance to 30,000 Citizens Gas customers last winter, said spokesman Dan Considine. The company has filed a brief with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission in support of the program.

United Senior Action held a meeting with seniors and those with disabilities on Wednesday to make them aware of the situation.

"We're here today to see that they get renewed, because we want them in place for the coming winter," said Dave Menzer with the Indiana Association of Community Action Programs.

Avonell Lane, 72, has received assistance from the Universal Service Fund since her husband died 11 years ago.

"I only draw about $800 a month. I have my house paid for, but all the utilities, insurance and taxes; it really helps me out," she said.

Ruby Butler, 73, relies on the assistance program, too.

"If I didn't have that help, I'd probably have to go without food, or without medicine," she said.

The IURC will hold hearings to determine if the program will be extended. The first is planned for Sept. 15.
