Indianapolis Water To Ask For Second Rate Hike

Utility Says It Needs Money For Federally Mandated Projects

Indianapolis Water is preparing to ask for another rate increase on the heels of a double-digit hike earlier this year.

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission approved an 11 percent increase this summer after the company slipped into debt amid the recession.

But while that extra money covered the utility's bills, the company said another increase is needed to help pay for federally mandated projects, including a UV disinfection system, 6News' Joanna Massee reported.

"I think that you're paying more to ensure that the capital projects that are necessary can be implemented," said Indianapolis Water Executive Director Matthew Klein. "(Our team is trying to) turn this ship around so we don't have to have rate increases to get the department out of the hole."

Customers may not like the idea of paying more, but some said there isn't much they can do.

"I wouldn't want to pay more, but do I have a choice if I want to use water?" said Terry Asdell.

Indianapolis Water will file it request for another rate hike on Sept. 30. If it is approved, customers could see the increase next summer.

There will be a public hearing on the proposed rate increase, but it has not yet been scheduled.
