INDIANAPOLIS -- With the team at 4-0, there's little Indianapolis Colts fans are worried about right now, but a combination of free agency and the looming possibility of a rollback of the NFL's salary cap could spell trouble for the franchise.Medium- and small-market NFL teams could suffer greatly if the salary cap goes away next year, the Indianapolis Business Journal and 6News' Rick Hightower reported.Large-market teams could lure key players, such as Gary Brackett, Raheem Brock, Joseph Addai, Adam Vinatieri and Peyton Manning within the next two years.
"They have some loyalty to the Colts, but if big-time owners come in with their checkbooks open, I think it could be a real free-for-all free agency period that could really hurt the Colts long-term," said Anthony Schoettle, of IBJ.Fans outside Lucas Oil Stadium Sunday said they are aware of what could happen and hope players and owners reach a deal to prevent it."It would hurt us a lot, and it would hurt even the city, because everybody loves them," said fan Alana McKenzie."Losing Colts key players that have actually turned this town into a football town I think would be detrimental," said Ralph McKenzie. If negotiations between the players union and owners drag into 2011, players could be locked out, which would affect the 2012 Super Bowl in Indianapolis. Some speculate that Colts owner Jim Irsay will do just about anything to keep Manning in the fold, but it might cost him a lot more to secure the future Hall of Famer if next season is the first without a salary cap since 1993.
