Regulators Approve Heat Help
Utilities Must Contribute 25% Of Funding

INDIANAPOLIS -- Consumer advocates applauded state regulators' decision Thursday to allow utilities to reinstate heating assistance programs for the needy.The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission approved a plan Thursday that allows Vectren, Citizens Gas and Northern Indiana Public Service Co. to reinstate natural gas rate discount programs that expired in May.But the IURC order requires the utilities to contribute at least 25 percent of the funding, something consumer attorney Jerome Polk said some companies have expressed reservations about.
Polk represents the AARP, United Senior Action and the Citzens Action Coalition.Utility representatives didn't immediately return phone calls seeking comment.
